It was previously possible to do so by taking apart the Kobo device

Own a Kobo Aura HD, Touch or Glo eReader and you’d like to breathe some new life into them? What would you say about a little sprinkle of Android?

A new uncovered hack, discovered by Angor’s blog allows owners of the devices to boot Android off an external microSD card instead of having to take the eReader apart and manually replace the microSD card.

The tutorial and downloadable files are available on the blog, and even though the initial tested device was the Kobo Aura HD, with the help of a few patches, the same was achieved on the Kobo Glo and Kobo Touch. The only one left out of the fun is the Kobo Aura which sport incompatible hardware with Android.

Porting Android works in this case, because the three eReaders mentioned above are built upon the same hardware as the German Tolino Shine that runs Android and developers have figured out how to root it and transfer the build (Android 2.3.4) to Kobo.
