Today at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona Trolltech announced the Qtopia 4 Series, including application platform and user interfaces that will support the use of Linux on a wide variety of devices. The product is a new incarnation of the customizable application platform and user interface for Linux-based consumer devices.

Trolltech claims Qtopia 4 will allow for solutions for a wider range of devices, from single-application products such as medical scanners to advanced feature phones, personal media players and other consumer electronics.

"Any embedded Linux device can benefit from Qtopia 4 Series," said Haavard Nord, CEO of Trolltech. "Currently, more than 90 vendors are designing, building or shipping devices based on Qtopia; of these, 40 are mobile phone designers and manufacturers. Additionally, as devices become more personalized, we expect to see a surge in interest around open-source software because of the speed and flexibility it offers developers of applications for these types of devices."

The company is known for its popular Qt cross-platform graphics framework. A new major version of it was released in June 2005, providing the foundation for the Qtopia 4 Series.
