Tripod Data Systems today released the next generation of its popular TDS Recon handheld computer - the new Recon X-Series, which offers to users the option of integrated Bluetooth and 802.11g wireless capabilities, and it comes with Windows Mobile 5.0, the latest version of Microsoft's software for handheld devices.

Tripod launched two models - the Recon 200X, which features a 200 MHz Intel XScale processor and 128 MB of Flash memory, and the Recon 400X, which features a 400 MHz processor and 256 MB of Flash memory. Other new features include a built-in microphone, a redesigned keypad, and an improved color touchscreen.

Moreover, the Recon X-Series benefits from the capabilities offered through an embedded MIL-STD-810F military standard included in order to protect the devices from the effects of vibrations, water and extreme temperatures. The X-Series has two Compact Flash (CF) slots, enabling users to add GPS, GPRS, digital cameras, bar-code scanners and other devices.

"Windows Mobile provides enterprises with a consistent and flexible platform to assist in the mobilization of their workforce and increase productivity," said Chris Hill, group product manager, Mobile & Embedded Devices Division, at Microsoft Corp. "Windows Mobile 5.0 along with Tripod Data System's rugged hardware provides access to important information at any time and anywhere in the most extreme conditions."

Windows Mobile 5.0 features Mobile versions of the 'traditional' Microsoft applications such as an enhanced version of the original Word document information, Excel Mobile, and Outlook Mobile, which features improved inbox navigation and e-mail account setup. Mobile versions of PowerPoint and Windows Media Player 10 are also included.
