Two 500 GB HDDs recognized as a single unit

As the amounts of data we work with on a daily basis have seriously increased over the past few years, the same phenomenon has applied to the market demand for external storage solutions with very high capacities. And one of the latest companies to join the 1 TB club is TrekStor, which has finally released its DataStation duo w.u model, after announcing it about 1 month ago.

As most of the portable HDD-based storage solutions manufactured by the German company, the DataStation duo w.u has a black aluminum outer shell which helps the device remain cool, which is not that difficult, especially since the power source is external and features a noiseless, fanless cooling system.

As mentioned earlier, the portable data storage solution offers 1 TB (1024 GB) of storage space, provided by 2 x 3.5-inch HDDs, recognized as a single unit. The drives have some pretty interesting specs, as the assembly can attain data transfer speeds (read/write) of up to 24.5 MB/s / 16.0 MB/s, has an average access time of around 13.7 ms, rotates at around 7200 RPM and sports an 16 MB buffer. Even if these values might seem a little lower than in the case of other portable HDDs, they're quite good for a device with a storage capacity of 1 TB.

The DataStation duo w.u connects to the computer via an USB 2.0 connector and comes packed with the Nero BackItUp 2 complete software solution for backup, which allows it to carry out fast backup operations at the touch of a button (it also supports on the fly compression). Moreover, it's compatible with the most popular operating systems currently used on computers around the world, namely Windows 98(SE), ME, 2000, XP, Vista, Mac OS X and Linux from Kernel 2.6.x.

The external storage device from Trekstor retails for around 430 US dollars, which is quite an OK price to pay for a storage solution with such a huge capacity, even if it's quite clear that most "normal" users won't really need this thing. After all, just how much (more or less legal) content can one download?
