A new beta release of Transmission 1.80 for Mac OS X is now available to the public. Currently at its third beta release, the P2P file-sharing (BitTorrent) client adds improved tracker announcement, less CPU-hungry encrypted handshakes to peers, German localization and more.

A BitTorrent client similar to the popular Vuze, Transmission is a peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing application whose code is licensed under the GNU General Public License, with select code licensed under the liberal MIT License. The program boasts a simple, intuitive interface designed to integrate tightly with any OS. Transmission is a Universal Binary, suitable for both Intel and PowerPC Macs.

Supported by developer Eric Petit, Transmission runs natively on Mac OS X, seamlessly configuring your network, banning peers who send corrupted data intelligently, using protocol encryption and built-in Peer Exchange. It also allows you to efficiently ration commodity, only slowing down your system when you actually focus on it.

As noted above, Transmission 1.80 Beta 3 adds tracker announcement improvements, while encrypted handshakes to peers now use less CPU. According to the release notes, the update also filters out spurious IP addresses obtained through LTEP. Besides the newly added German language support and various interface tweaks, the following bugs have been addressed:

- Fixed 1.80 beta 1 bug that incorrectly displayed some scrapes as failed; - Fixed minor memory leaks; - Fixed favicons in the tracker inspector tab; - Fixed 1.80 beta 1 potential crash when removing trackers; - Fixed 1.80 beta 1 crash when removing data files; - Fixed 1.80 beta 1 issue with revealing the window when clicking on the dock icon.

The program is free to download and use on any machine running Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) or later. The latest releases, including Tiger and Panther-supported versions, can be obtained using the download link below. Transmission is now 64-bit compatible, allowing it to excel on computers running Snow Leopard.
