It won't be a co-op experience, however, as it didn't work in Bastion

Supergiant Games, the independent developer behind the popular Bastion, has talked about its next project, Transistor, and how it features a sort of multiplayer mode that allows players to see the paths taken by others in the game.

Bastion impressed lots of people when it first appeared back in 2011 by delivering a unique isometric brawling experience with a great story and a dynamic world.

For its next project, developer Supergiant Games is heading into a similar direction through Transistor, a new experience set in a different universe but with a distinct Bastion vibe.

According to the studio, the new title will even feature a multiplayer experience, although, for now, it's only limited to making players feel connected to a bigger world and seeing the paths taken by others in the game.

"The combat maybe could work in multiplayer, but I don’t see this game having deathmatch arenas or whatever. I think I can say that pretty safely," Supergiant's Greg Kasavin told RPS.

"Something we’re more interested in is a sense of feeling connected to other people who are playing in a subtle way."

"You can still have your personal experience around the story, but you always know you belong in a larger [world]. For example, players can sometimes see traces of other players’ paths moving around. Things of that nature. What’s interesting to us about this world is that it lends itself to some interesting things like that."

Kasavin even mentioned that a co-op mode was prototyped for Bastion but, in the end, the whole system was scrapped because it affected the story and the narration.

As such, it's unlikely that Transistor is going to feature any cooperative experience.

"It’s not in the cards for us right now. But again, the part where you don’t feel alone in the world is very important to us. Solitude can be a very powerful feeling in games, but we want to use it intentionally. We don’t just want it to be the default mode of being in the game. We’d rather play around with it and use it purposefully."

Transistor is set to appear next year.
