Hours ago, transgender teen Cassidy Lynn Campbell became the first transgender to be crowned homecoming queen at the Marina High School in Huntington Beach.

The video embedded above is of her speech after the win. She is the first to admit she didn’t even dream she stood a chance of taking home the crown.

However, now that she did, she’s determined to use the media attention she’s getting to shine more light on LGBT issues and, at the same time, to send a message to other teens dealing with the same problems as hers.

Just be yourself, stay true to yourself and never let anyone else tell you that it’s wrong: this is how her message goes.

“I was so proud to win, not just for me but for everyone out there. I think it really shows the progression of the times,” Cassidy also told reporters.

Cassidy is 16 years old. She was born male but, a few years ago, she decided to embrace her true identity. She hopes winning homecoming queen will help the entire school finally accept her as a girl.
