14 DAY TRIAL // Even though solid state drives are gaining ground, hard drives are still in the lead with a more widespread adoption and larger storage capabilities. Hard drive storage solutions have also been seeing the addition of various performance-boosting and backup technologies, which have further propelled their success. Adding to the wide array of HDD units is Transcend with its StoreJet line of devices with auto-backup features, the TurboHDD transfer mode and capacities of up to 1.5TB.
The new products introduced by Transcend Information, Inc. are the 3.5-inch StoreJet 3U and StoreJet 35T. Both of them operate on the 3.0 Gb/s eSATA and the USB 2.0 interfaces and have storage capacities large enough to not only hold a large number of files, but also for file and folder backup tasks.
The StoreJet 35U connects through both the eSATA and the 480Mb/s USB 2.0 interface. As such, it is compatible with most types of computers. Furthermore, the use of an efficient cooling solution maintains its stability, unlike other 3.5 drives that are prone to data loss and drive failure as a result of overheating. The cooler uses an 80mm high-flow fan.
Featuring the same universal compatibility, the second in this line is the StoreJet 35T. This drive is both eco- and user-friendly, with its TurboHDD USB technology and its power-saving sleep mode. The TurboHDD USB feature enables data-transfer rate boosts for up to an average of 42MB/s, compared with the regular 33MB/s.
This is equivalent to about a 30-percent improvement. Also, the aforementioned sleep mode is automatically entered after ten minutes of inactivity. As such, energy savings of up to 67 percent can be achieved. The drive also boasts the OneTouch auto-backup button, which allows for the instant backup and synchronization of data with one's notebook or desktop PC.
Besides their individual capabilities, both drives will be bundled with the company's own StoreJet Elite software, which enables intelligent backup scheduling and also includes advanced security options and Internet tools. Both the StoreJet 35U and 35T are compatible with Windows 7.
The StoreJet 35T comes in high storage capabilities of 1TB ($192) and 1.5TB ($221), whereas the 35U also comes in a 500GB version. The 1TB 35U is priced at $197 and the 1.5TB model at $226. The special aluminum casing of the Storejet 35U can also be bought separately for $54.
