A few months ago the computer hardware manufacturing company Transcend announced that it will design and manufacture a solid state drive, SSD for short, that is aimed at the mobile computer market segment as a replacement or an addition to the traditional hard disk drive.

Now the company announced that it will start shipping the first batch of these solid state drives soon and the new drives are coming to the retail channel as well as system integrators. As the Transcend solid state drive is aimed at the mobile computer market segment, it comes in the small 2.5 inch form factor typical for it and in order to maximize the data transferring speed it also uses the fast Serial ATA interface, while being only 9.5mm thick.

The Transcend solid state drive has, according to the news site tcmagazine, a storage capacity of 32GB and it comes with a built in Error Correction Code (ECC for short) function that allows for better data integrity while also being shock resistant and lightweight, two very important features that are expected from any portable storage device.

On the performance side, the new portable solid state drive from Transcend is offering decent features as it is capable of sustaining a read speed of 26MB per second while also being capable of writing at a pretty good speed of 13MB per second. Following the current hardware industry trend, the 32GB solid state drive from Transcend is RoHS compliant and it also comes with a limited two year warranty and it features a price tag of $386 that positions it as a middle level SSD.

For those users that do not wish to spend so much on a single drive, Transcend has two more offers, a solid state drive with 16GB capacity that is priced at $320 and another drive with 8GB that is sold for $170, although their price tags are bound to go significantly down once the 32GB model hits the market.
