Employs the exFAT system and complies with SD 3.0 specifications

June is definitely shaping up to be a very crowded month, mostly because hardware makers and PC suppliers have definitely not been idle, especially over the past couple of weeks. New CPUs have emerged, along with a suitable array of new netbooks, nettops, notebooks and desktops. Granted, the component market has not been as rich in novel items, but some SSDs and hard disk drives, among other things, still saw the light of day during this period. Transcend has now decided to do something a little different.

Instead of unveiling some sort of new memory product or storage device meant to complement an existing series, Transcend has announced that it has begun a foray into a market segment that, until now, was out of its field of focus. To be more specific, the hardware supplier brought its very first SDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity) memory card.

Back when SD cards first started being used, the so-called Class 10 type of memory cards could barely reach 10MB/s when writing. As time passed, however, and video and photo formats evolved in order to permit a higher quality, there arose the need for a much higher performance. Eventually, the industry consortium that oversees the Secure Digital Class 10 revised their specifications, to the point where Class 10 began to define a card capable of recording Full HD images and videos. Transcend has just unleashed its first SDXC compliant with the SD 3.0 specification.

Transcend's SDXC memory card utilizes the exFAT system, has a storage capacity of 64GB and can transfer at up to 25MB/s. It also features built-in Error Correction Code (ECC) and is accompanied by a lifetime warranty. Transcend is also offering 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB SDHC cards. Unfortunately, the manufacturer was far from generous when it came to pricing or availability details.
