Peter Jackson returns to the mythology that made movie history

Ten years ago, Peter Jackson proved nay-sayers wrong and turned J.R.R. Tolkien's novels into film, a task that was deemed impossible until then. He's now returning to the fantasy world with two films based on the original novel “The Hobbit.”

The first trailer for the first film, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” has been released – and you can see it in HD above.

Telling the story of an amazing adventure of hobbit Bilbo Baggins, the film will also include plenty of characters fans of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy must already know, some of which they'll also recognize in the trailer.

To say that the film promises to be impressive is quite an understatement at this point. In fact, voices online are saying the trailer is pretty solid confirmation that the film will be one of the best of 2012.

Boasting an incredible cast and amazing special effects (you can get a fair idea of how it'll look in 3D already – and it will be awesome!), “The Hobbit” drops in theaters on December 14, 2012.
