Award-winning filmmaker Werner Herzog is getting ready to release another film. Called “Into the Abyss: A Tale of Life, A Tale of Death,” it promises to be a real eye-opener, if one is to judge by the first trailer.

“Into the Abyss” tackles the ever-burning question of the morality of the death penalty. It promises not to take any sides, but to offer the broadest perspective on the issue possible.

To make the documentary, Herzog talked to inmates on death row, police officers investigating the crimes they were found guilty of and, of course, the families of the victims.

Also featured is 28-year-old Michael Perry, who was scheduled to die just 8 days after he sat down with Herzog for the interview. He was convicted for gunning down a nurse and stealing her red convertible.

Herzog describes his latest film as “a gaze into the abyss of the human soul.” The trailer certainly seems to promise just that.
