Gritty story backed up by a stellar cast

It seems like Benicio Del Toro has been working on “The Wolfman” since forever – and then there’s also the issue of the movie being pushed back time and time again, which is never a good sign when a major production is concerned. Still, judging by the full-length trailer of Joe Johnston’s film, which was just released for the impatient fans, February 2010 can’t come soon enough.

According to most movie-oriented publications, “The Wolfman” seems to pack quite a heavy punch, even if apparently treading the same old path that other movies of the type have also gone down before, the latest being “Wolverine,” for instance – the wolf, the man who gets bitten and doesn’t want to transform, the love interest, and so on and so forth. However, one can’t ignore the stellar cast in it, made up of actors who have rarely, if ever, failed their fans in any way, the director and the beautiful rendering of the gritty atmosphere.

Like the trailer also shows, “The Wolfman” deals with the ever-fascinating story of the werewolves, where men turn into beasts when the full moon is high up in the sky. Lawrence Talbot (Benicio Del Toro) is the prodigal son that returns home into the arms of his loving father (Anthony Hopkins), to assist at his brother’s funeral. Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt) is his brother’s fiancée, the woman he learns to love with all his heart and whom, towards the end, he must protect from himself. As fans can imagine, Lawrence too is bit by the savage animal lurking in the forests – and soon becomes one himself.

“Inspired by the classic Universal film that launched a legacy of horror, ‘The Wolfman’ brings the myth of a cursed man back to its iconic origins. Joe Johnston (‘Jurassic Park III’) directs ‘The Wolfman,’ and six-time Oscar-winning special effects artist Rick Baker brings his design and makeup talents to transform Del Toro into the fearsome title character.” Collider writes of the upcoming film.

As noted above, “The Wolfman” is scheduled for theatrical release in the US for February 10, 2010. It’s still a long way to go until then, so, in the meantime, check out the trailer below and see if you too think it’s worth the wait.
