TrailRunner is a route-planning software application developed by Berbie specifically for Mac users who like to stay in shape. Now at version 3.0 build 512, the program fixes the Google Terrain map source, and adds a button in activity details to recalculate calories, to name some of the changes.

According to Berbie, the Google Terrain map source was broken in earlier versions of TrailRunner. The developer was able to fix this annoying bug, alongside other errors, like:

- Editing a route removing all transient points failed to add more afterwards. - Activity TCX export missed heart-rate info. - Deselection of a selected route did not update the map display. - Scroll performance degradation. - In the track inspector panel for activities to be imported it was not possible to remove workout-points from the end of the track. Also the selection now stays at the end after a removal.

More improvements have been made on the user interface front. Berbie has added a button in “activity details” to recalculate calories, as well as a power graph to the weeks chart, AVG and max power fields, and power zones to diary workout details. Everytrail.com is now an option to upload routes to an online community, while the “Community Routes” toolbar button has been renamed to replace “Routes” with “Communities.” Finally, “Trim selection” has been changed to “Trim to selection” in the track inspector panel, including “a tool-tip explaining the magic behind this command.”

“If you ever asked yourself how long your workout routes are and what route you should choose for this evening — then TrailRunner should be your training-partner,” Berbie says on its TrailRunnerX website. “TrailRunner can calculate a route for your desired distance and export directions onto your iPod, giving you a detailed orientation while you are on your way.”

“The goal for the application is to become the very intuitive and easy to use tool for people that want to be motivated as adventurers and do not fear experimenting with new tracks in the surrounding area of their well-known workout routes,” the company adds.

TrailRunner can display maps and elevation data from web-based mapping services like USGS topo maps, import GPS recordings from Trails for iPhone, as well as import tracks and workouts from GPS fitness devices like the Garmin ForeRunner or Garmin Edge.

A note about TrailRunner for our readers

TrailRunner is still in pre-release state. Although downloading and using the app is free, all current releases of TrailRunner will only run for about three months. Users are advised to regularly update to the most current version, as well as review and accept the License Agreement that comes with the application, before using it. TrailRunner versions above 1.6 (including the one available for download today) require Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard to run. The only remaining version supported on Tiger is TrailRunner 1.6. TrailRunner is updated on a weekly basis with very few exceptions.
