Hunting games usually rely heavily on multiplayer for game progression

Toukiden: The Age of Demons is a demon-hunting role-playing game for the PlayStation Vita, released by Omega Force in Japan in June last year, and currently headed for western markets.

"I think that the strategic depth of the Mitama system and the unique Japanese settings have allowed us to bring a fresh and exciting game to western gamers," Producer Kenichi Ogasawara stated for VG247.

Although the game's setting is profoundly influenced by Japanese medieval culture and folklore, no prior knowledge is needed in order to enjoy Toukiden: The Age of Demons.

In Japan, hunting games and portable gaming systems are really big, but western markets are a rather risky endeavor for both the Vita and co-op based games.

Although the game is marketed as a cooperative multiplayer experience where players work in tandem in order to bring down powerful Oni, the game's entire storyline can be enjoyed in single-player mode.

"After the main story is cleared, more powerful enemies will appear so it may be more efficient to defeat them in co-op play. In addition to Ad hoc play, there is online multiplayer so it should be easy to find co-op partners," Ogasawara explained.

He said that the Omega Force team designed the game with a much more strategic action feeling than their most famous franchise, Dynasty Warriors, using gigantic enemies and requiring players to use synergies in order to take them down.

A free demo of the game has already been released on the PSN, and interested players can give the game a spin and see for themselves whether the Japanese hunting game craze will take them in as well.

Toukiden: The Age of Demons is scheduled to come out for the PlayStation Vita, on February 11 in North America and on February 14 in Europe.
