Developer The Creative Assembly and publisher SEGA have announced that they are planning to release a demo version of their highly anticipated Total War: Shogun 2 strategy game on February 22, delivered exclusively through the digital distribution service Steam.

[ADMARk=1]The two companies say that the demo will include a taste of the new campaign map and its unique mechanics and a chance for players to take part in some land battles, testing their samurai leadership skills against the newly designed computer intelligence.

SEGA has not said whether a turn limit will be placed on the demo or if players will only be able to explore a small portion of the map, but the whole content should take about one hour to get through.

The publisher has also announced two pre-order bonuses linked to Total War: Shogun 2, linked to two of the biggest video game retailers.

Those who get the strategy game at GameStop, either in a brick-and-mortar store or online, will be able to play The Battle of Kawagoe, where the Hojo clan fought the Uesugi in a night battle.

At Best Buy players will get a code to unlock 1,000 Koku, the currency that Total War: Shogun 2 uses, in order to get a head start on the campaign map and have an easier time in the early game.

Total War: Shogun 2 sees the long-running The Creative Assembly developed series return to the land of Japan, where the first game was set, and the team working on the game promises a more focused, cleaner experience than that offered by previous titles Napoleon and Empire.

As always before a new Total War game, a new Artificial Intelligence is promised, one that can pose real problems to a human strategy gamer.

The full version of Total War: Shogun 2 is planned for March 15 in North America and three days later in Europe.
