The development team at The Creative Assembly has managed to get some hands-on time with the recently announced Steam Controller from Valve and the company says that it can configure the new device to work with Total War: Rome II in half an hour.

Rob Bartholomew, the brand manager working on the franchise, says that his team has only tested a number of ideas and believes the Steam Controller is very flexible.

The developer tells PCGamesN, “if we were designing the next Total War or looking at Rome 2 and wanting to release an official CA Rome 2 control config file, I reckon we could get something within half an hour, certainly within an hour.”

He adds, “The whole team felt pretty good about that being the control mechanism, and then we could just release that online and guys can share that or customise or add to it or just scrap the whole thing and design their own control config for the controller.”

The developer believes that when an official Steam Controller configuration for Total War: Rome II is launched, those who choose to use it will be able to have the same flexibility as those who use a traditional mouse and keyboard setup 99 percent of the time.

For a long time, The Creative Assembly maintained that it was not even thinking of creating console versions for Total War because traditional controllers were not flexible enough for the strategy game.

Currently, there are no official plans to support the Steam Controller for Rome II.

At the moment, the game is getting almost weekly patches that are designed to improve overall performance and balance.

Valve plans to officially launch its SteamOS and the associated hardware in 2014, with a limited number of lucky gamers able to beta test them early during the year.
