Developer The Creative Assembly and publisher SEGA have confirmed that the next game in the Total War series is Rome 2, and the two companies have now offered a number of initial details on how the experience will push forward the successful strategy formula.

After the narrowed focus of Shogun 2, which looked only at Japan, with one core culture to explore and a limited number of units and buildings, Rome 2 is set to expand the scope of the experience once more.

Thus, it allows players to rule over Rome but also over the various other powers that contested Europe and the Mediterranean during Ancient times.

Gamers will also be able to experience battles that are bigger than ever before, with thousands of units on the screen at the same time and a new model for city destructions, which takes into account the way the sieges are evolving.

The Creative Assembly is also keen to show off the big decisions of the time, with the player in charge of evolving his characters and choosing the future destinies of the Roman people, their allies and their enemies.

Mike Simpson, who is the creative director of Total War: Rome 2, stated, “Our games have always encompassed a grand vision. But we’re now pushing that vision at both ends of the spectrum.”

“From the immense reach of the sandbox campaign right down to the human-level drama of a single warrior on the battlefield, we’re aiming for an unprecedented level of detail and scale,” he added.

Rob Bartholomew, the brand director, also reported, “In our 25th year of games development, it feels fitting to return to our most critically acclaimed era. There’s been a multi-generational leap in technology since the original game and we are ready to set another benchmark in gaming.”

Total War: Rome 2 will be launched during the second half of 2013 exclusively on the PC.
