Video game developer The Creative Assembly and publisher SEGA are announcing that they are working on a new piece of downloadable content for Total War: Attila, called The Last Roman, which will introduce a new campaign for gamers to explore.

The DLC will focus on the legendary figure of Belisarius, widely seen as the best military commander of the period, who is tasked by Emperor Justinian of the Eastern Roman Empire to try and recapture the lands to the West.

The Last Roman campaign pack is using a new re-designed map for the Mediterranean theater, with carefully recreated provinces and settlements.

The start date is set for 533 AD, and there are 35 provinces with 100 regions to conquer.

Gamers will be able to take control of five playable factions, with the most interesting of them being the Roman Expedition that Belisarius will lead.

The Creative Assembly says, "The Emperor, the Empress and your own wife, Antonina, vie for your attention, demanding arduous and often contradictory services. Completing these tasks will provide you with the men and supplies you need, but offending the wrong person will greatly weaken the fragile Expedition."

Gamers can also choose to become independent, but that means they will have to use limited resources and will get no assistance from the East and might be swiftly defeated by barbarian kingdoms.

Four other factions are playable in The Last Roman for Total War: Attila

The Roman Expedition might have the more intricate story in the coming DLC, but gamers can also take control of the Ostrogoths, Vandals, Franks and the Visigoths, each faction with its unique play style and traits.

The barbarian kingdoms will have to find a way to deal with the capable Belisarius while also finding opportunities to expand their territories.

The Creative Assembly is not adding any major new features to the combat system of Total War: Attila in the coming DLC.

The developers are offering a new list of units for each of the factions, with new types of soldiers able to fulfill tactical roles on the battlefield. There are also new technologies to research, which reflect the period that The Last Roman explores.

The new DLC for Total War: Attila will be launched on June 25 and can be now pre-ordered on Steam.
