The batteries did it

Toshiba will seek damages from Sony for product image and missed sales opportunities over the recall of Sony-made batteries used in its laptops, according to Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Japan Economic Times), one of the largest media corporations in Japan, specialized in financial, business and industry news. The NKS is the world's largest financial newspaper, with a daily circulation well over 3 million, so it's safe to say they wouldn't launch such an affirmation without being absolutely sure about it.

Toshiba is currently recalling 830,000 Sony-made batteries, which Sony has said that can on rare occasions overheat and catch fire. Sony is expected to shoulder the costs for replacing the batteries, such as new battery and shipment expenses, the business daily said. Other computer makers such as Dell, Apple, Lenovo, IBM, Sharp, Fujitsu and Hitachi have also decided to recall a total of roughly 7.74 million Sony-made batteries. More about the batteries here.

Toshiba is now working on estimates for missed sales opportunities and other figures. A few days ago, Toshiba spokesman Keisuke Omori said "the recall was in response to Sony's request, and Toshiba hadn't found any cases in which the laptops were at risk of catching fire", and they just wanted to assure and satisfy the customers.

It seems Toshiba wants to ride the tidal wave instead of sinking, like others, at the same time leaving the impression they are sinless and throwing stones.
