Seeking to cut budget, the company thinks it can come up with fresh product designs too

There is little doubt that Toshiba's latest business decision is primarily meant to reduce operating expenses, but there is some truth to the other claim on the company's part.

The short version of the story is that Toshiba has decided to merge together its PC, TV and tablet groups, in order to reduce the budget and maybe come up with new design ideas at the same time.

That means that the team working on the Regza TV series will be moved to the Tokyo facility where the PC and tablet divisions reside.

We suspect that new Smart TVs will result from this. The effects on PCs and slates are harder to speculate on, given the relatively strict spec set they need to have, at minimum, and the relatively low price they need to strive towards.

At any rate, results will only show themselves later this year, in the fourth quarter probably.
