Following the release of the quad-core, gaming capable Qosmio laptop that Toshiba introduced yesterday, a new portable computer system, also designed by the aforementioned systems vendor, is now taking center stage. Designed to be part of the company's ultra-portable Portege range of laptops, the new A605 is available at a starting price tag of $1,399.99.

According to Toshiba, the just-released 12.1-inch Portege A605 is based on another model from the company's range of portable systems, namely the business-oriented Portege R500. The new A605 system is set to deliver a high level of computing performance in a 12.1-inch ultra-portable PC that measures just 1.18 inches in thinness, and has a starting weight of 3.3 pounds. In addition, the light Portege A605 is said to deliver an impressive battery life of 6 hours.

As for the system's technical specifications, it seems that Toshiba has equipped its most recent ultra-portable PC with some of the latest in computing technologies, including the new Intel Centrino 2 platform. For that matter, the system features an Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400 processor, 3 GB of DDR2 800MHz RAM memory, and a high-capacity 250GB hard disk drive.

Despite the physical features of the new A605, the company has also managed to equip the system with a DVD optical drive and even a wireless 802.11 a/g/n module. As it is designed on Intel's latest mobile platform, the Portege A605 comes with the integrated Intel's Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD solution.

Additional features include a fingerprint reader, a built-in webcam, high-speed eSATA port and a USB sleep-and-charge port. All of the above are available in a 12.1-inch ultra-portable laptop that is running on Microsoft's Windows Vista SP1 32-bit version. The system is now available through both the company's website and several major consumer electronics or computer stores.
