By using a 2.5-inch hard drive in an external enclosure

As a computer user, I've found myself many times in the position when I needed an external storage device to transfer information between point A and point B. First I used CDs, then switched to DVDs, but, both are very sensitive storage media and so I bought a pendrive, a 1GB model, considering that it would be the most appropriate storage capacity for personal use. The first pendrive was slow, so I sold it, the second one, the one I'm currently using stopped recognizing anything above 640MB, and I would have something to say about the quality of the products some companies market, and even would have taken it to the company I bought it from, but I lost the cap and now I'm stuck with it.

So the thought crossed my mind, I always have to transfer some kind of information back and forth between different computers, and I've discovered that a 1GB pendrive just won't suffice for my needs; seeing that a larger pendrive would cost a lot, for the specs it offers, I was thinking about buying an external hard drive. It's a lot easier to have something of the size of a PALM in your pocket and to have the ability of saving all that data on it. Apparently, I'm not the only one thinking this way.

Toshiba's Storage Device Division (SDD) has introduced a new series of external 2.5-inch USB 2.0 portable hard drives with capacities ranging from 100 to 200GB. The 200GB model is the largest 2.5-inch external hard drive in the world (for now) and comes, like all the drives in the series, with an external aluminum casing which is specially designed to withstand long term wear and tear, fingerprints and even scratching.

Maciek Brzeski, vice president of marketing, Toshiba SDD said: "Each year, consumers are generating thousands of digital content files that represent cherished memories, beloved entertainment content and important family and business information, yet the notion of preserving this information with a backup solution is just beginning to take hold. We have addressed a critical need for preserving digital memories for years to come with a high-capacity, easy-to-use solution that takes the mystery and worry out of data backup."

These drives are compatible to Windows OSs, including XP and Vista, and to Mac OS X, the manufacturer including an easy-to-use NTI Shadow Software which allows the user to configure back-ups and save data periodically. MSRP prices for these models are: 200GB - $229.99; 160GB - $179.99; 120GB - $149.99; 100GB - $129.99.
