Toshiba's become quite well-known in the field of storage solutions for pushing to the market some very innovative 2.5-inch HDDs (hard-disk drives), and now, they're back with yet another very interesting offering in this segment, namely two new 2.5-inch HDD models designed for rugged 24-hour continuous operation in computing, industrial, and other extreme environments. So, as Toshiba informs us, the new storage solutions, namely the 100GB SATA interface MK1060GSCX model and the 80GB PATA interface MK8050GACY model deliver enhanced reliability and a higher level of performance across wide temperature, altitude, and vibration ranges, making them very good choices for use in industrial equipment such as ATMs, digital surveillance, factory automation, and ruggedized PCs. The MK1060GSCX HDD from Toshiba sports 1 platter and 1 reading head, 4200 rpm rotation spead, a 12 ms average seek time and an interface data transfer rate of around 1.5 Gb/s. Furthermore, it measures 69.85x100.0x9.5 mm and weighs just around 96 grams. While the 80GB MK8050GACY HDD has exactly the same dimensions, number of platters (1) and rotational speed as its sibling, some of its other features are rather different, starting with the interface speed (just 100 MB/s for the ATA-7 connection) and continuing with the the average seek time (16 ms) and the number of reading heads (2). “The reliability and performance of today’s hard disk drives continue to expand the applications for digital storage technologies beyond traditional markets,” said Scott Wright, Product Manager, Toshiba Storage Device Division. “These new models provide both the extended operating range for commercial applications as well as a longer model production window to better fit commercial design and business cycles,” added Mr. Wright. The MK1060GSCX and MK8050GACY will begin volume production in December 2010, which means that they first devices to actually make use of their impressive features will become available in Spring 2011.
