Might actually be used for everything up to even glasses-free 3D

Toshiba is known for a lot of things, like batteries and being the world's third greatest HDD supplier and, soon, it may be known as maker of tablet screens as well, maybe with glasses-free 3D support.

One thing that is sure to help any company's finances over the next few years is for them to have some sort of stake in the tablet segment.

In other words, they will either make tablets or components for them, it doesn't matter which.

Toshiba is going for the second options, so to speak, or will do so at some point in the near to mid-term.

What the company did was issue a press announcement where it details a new display for tablets and maybe even bigger than usual smartphones.

It is still uncertain if large phones with 6-inch screens or larger will take off, but tablets probably won't think twice about it.

As such, Toshiba might reap quite a few benefits as it can start shipping the new 6.1-inch panel in a timely fashion.

No word yet on how long that will actually be, though, but Toshiba did provide the specifications sheet.

The first thing that jumps into view is the remarcable resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels, or 498ppi, which is well beyond what most monitors of today can accomplish.

In fact, since even Full HD (1,920 by 1,080 pixels) isn't actually mainstream on monitors and TVs yet (or is, but only since a fairly short time ago), Toshiba's small screen seems even more impressive.

The panel has 16.7 million colors, a 61% coverage of the NTSC color gamut, viewing angles of 178 degrees (horizontal and vertical) and a contrast ratio of 1,000:1.

Furthermore, Toshiba says that, at the cost of halving the resolution, the screen will be capable of conveying glasses-free 3D as well.
