Memory cards represent the storage solutions of choice for a large number of portable devices, as they provide relatively large storage spaces in a very small and reliable form factor. And considering the fact that data storage space and access speeds are extremely important nowadays, Toshiba has added yet another model to its already popular line of microSDHC memory cards, dubbed SD-MH004GA (at least on the Japanese market), which provides users with 4 GB of storage space as well as maximum writing speed of 6MB per second.

It's quite a well-known fact that microSD (and consequently, microSDHC) is a popular format especially among the manufacturers of various handhelds (smartphones, PDAs, etc.). Thus, the new model is compatible with all the devices that support the SD Memory Card Ver. 2.00 standard and provides extensive support for large capacity files, as for example high resolution images and music (up to 69 hours of music and 28 hours of 1Seg TV programs).

The new 4 GB microSDHC memory card is quite tiny, measuring just 15 mm x 11 mm x 1 mm, at a weight of just 0.4 grams. It complies with the "Class 4" SD Speed Class, guaranteeing sustained data write at 4MB/s, but, as mentioned earlier, it supports a maximum write speed of around 6 MB/s.

The company is quite aware that the market of memory cards is still far, far away from having reached its maximum potential. Thus, according to the company's statement "The market for high density memory cards will grow alongside increasing demand for digital equipment, such as mobile phones that can record and display video and high resolution images. Toshiba will continue to expand and upgrade its SDHC and SD Memory Card series to meet the growing demand for high speed, high capacity products", which means, in other words, that the Japanese company will keep throwing new and improved models on the market.

As mentioned right from the beginning, the new 4 GB microSDHC memory card will be available in Japan starting in July, while the rest of the world will probably have to wait a while longer. The company hasn't offered any significant pricing information, but they did mention that they'll be manufacturing around 150,000 of these things every month, which means that Europe and the US will probably have to wait until early 2007 before getting the new memory cards.
