There are already a fair number of external and/or portable hard disk drives on the market, but it looks like Toshiba went with the “always room for more” motto and produced a new series of them.

There seem to be a large number of new storage units coming out lately, both of the HDD and SSD variety, some with bandwidth of 2 GB/s.

Of course, this might be because Computex 2011 is just around the corner, although, on the other hand, one would think companies would be holding off on things until the trade show actually starts.

This once, it is Toshiba that has come forth and made a new announcement, revealing the existence of the STOR.E Edition.

This line of portable HDDs is composed of multiple storage options, the largest being 1 TB, while color options include red, silver, black and blue.

In fact, one might say that the newcomers emulate the aesthetic design of the Satellite, Satellite Pro and Tecra R laptops.

That said, all of them feature the USB 3.0 connection, which puts them in line with all other current-generation products.

For those that want a reminder, the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 standard allows for theoretical maximum transfer speeds of 5 Gbps.

This is ten times the maximum of USB 2.0 and is a major cause behind its rapid popularity rise among both external HDDs and SSDs, plus flash drives and the like.

All in all, the STOR.E Edition drives should have no problem in becoming portable digital media libraries or backup solutions.

In fact, Toshiba seems to have made a point of painting this as the optimum use, as it bundled the products with the Nero BackItUp & Burn Essentials software.

The announcement doesn't say what prices they have, but it shouldn't be long before online stores reveal this final bit of information.
