Toshiba's Canvio series of hard disk drive units is one that has been around for quite a long time, but is also ever growing, as evident from the company's latest product introduction.

Toshiba has formally released the Canvio Connect and Canvio Slim Mobile series portable hard disk drive units (HDDs).

So far, they've only been spotted in Japan, but we assume they will make their way to other countries soon. Keep an eye on retailers if you're in the market for something of this nature.

The Canvio Slim Mobile is, as people may have guessed, the smaller and easier to carry of the two collections.

The drives measure 75 x 107 mm, or 2.95 x 4.12 inches, and have a brushed aluminum body garnish with silver and graphite trims.

The thickness is of 9 mm / 0.35 inches for the 500 GB HDD, and 12.5 mm / 0.49 inches for the 1 TB variant.

That's right, there are only two models here, one with one platter and one with 2 platters (hence the different thicknesses).

The Canvio Connect line also comes in 2 TB and measures 79 x 111 mm / 3.11 x 4.37 inches. And since there are three capacities, there are different thicknesses here too, though not three, as odd as it may seem.

The 500 GB and 1 TB variants both have 15 mm / 0.59 inch profiles, while the 2 TB drive has a 20.5 mm / 0.80 inch thickness.

Finally, Toshiba's Canvio Connect line of HDDs comes in grey, silver, black, red and blue cases. That's three extra shades compared to Canvio Slim Mobile.

All the newcomers communicate with PCs through the USB 3.0 interface and are bus-powered (don't need more than the energy from the USB connection). A remote-access software that lets you access its contents over the Internet is included with the Canvio Connect.
