Disc-player might not be of the same usefulness as in the past, but today’s Blu-ray models have moved away from actually performing the act of spinning a disc to being the means to enhance smart TV experience.

Toshiba’s Symbio media box line is about to receive an upgrade and when it does, we’re going to see two models, the BDX5500 and BDX3500, arrive with features especially tailored to work in concert with new TV models, reports Japanese site MyNavi.

The BDX5500 is equipped with a “screen upscale engine” that is supposed to help optimize content that goes on a bigger 4K screen. It would allow 1080p videos (or TV channels for that matter) to be played on such a screen without viewers noticing any decrease in quality.

The BDX3500, on the other hand, will come sporting more modest upgrades, like enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity.

Toshiba plans to make the two models available somewhere at the end of Q1.
