Though not likely to match Seagate's 1.5TB portable beast any time soon, Toshiba is still bound to cause a few ripples with the latest Canvio Basics models, which use the USB 2.0 interface and are supposedly aimed at the masses.

Once again, a hardware maker has unleashed a number of portable storage solutions that promise to help mainstream users keep their important files close at hand.

The newcomers go by the names of Canvio Basics and were given 320GB, 500GB or 750GB of internal storage by their maker, Toshiba.

These electronics are not exactly in the same league as Seagate's 1.5TB unit, but neither do they mean to, being aimed at a different market.

Basically, they are aimed at the bulk of the consumer base and, thus, come with an aesthetically pleasing design and no unnecessary features to add extra costs.

For one, they all employ the 2.5-inch form factor and boast glossy black enclosures, with rounded edges and made of 100% recyclable materials.

What's more, the devices are built with an internal shock sensor, or better physical endurance, something important for products prone to suffering drops.

Other specifications include Ramp Loading Technology and plug-and-play compatibility, which means it needs no more than to be plugged into a PC in order to be used.

"With the Canvio Basics line, we wanted to bring an effortless digital storage solution to the masses," said Manuel Camarena, product manager for consumer storage at Toshiba Storage Device Division.

"This new drive offers a sleek solution with plenty of storage capacity for the growing amount of digital content, from photos and videos to music and documents,” he added.

The Canvio Basics is a convenient and versatile choice for anyone who needs the peace of mind that comes with high capacity portable external storage," Canmarena concluded.

The 320GB, 500GB and 750GB Canvio Basics hard disk drives from Toshiba have prices of $80, $100 and $120, respectively.
