Runic Games, the developer behind the upcoming Torchlight II role playing dungeon crawler, has made a statement concerning its biggest rivals, Diablo III, which has just received a concrete launch date last week.

The original Torchlight impressed millions of gamers from all around the world with its polished RPG mechanics that reminded many of Diablo II, the last installment in Blizzard’s extremely popular series.

With Torchlight II, Runic wants to deliver an even better experience that will come out this year. Unfortunately for Runic, Blizzard also intends to reveal Diablo III, its long awaited sequel on May 15.

This doesn’t worry the studio, as an official message on the game’s blog highlights the attitude of the small independent developer.

“We know a lot of you are worried about us,” Runic mentioned. “We've heard what you're saying, and sure we've had similar discussions. But we began making the first Torchlight in 2008 when development on Diablo III was already underway. We didn't let that be a reason that we couldn't make an RPG. We made the commitment to create a game we loved to play. That's what's important to us, and that's why we go to work every day.”

The studio believes that its passion will be reflected in Torchlight II and will no doubt please lots of fans despite the fact that it will immediately be compared with Diablo III, even if it’s smaller, lower priced and made by an indie team.

“There will be unforeseen challenges along the way, no matter what business you're in. We've chosen to stay small with a total team of 32. We want to be the company that works hard and makes something we love.”

The studio does congratulate Blizzard on finally pinning a release date on Diablo III and hopes that the game will make good on its promises after all the years it spent in development.

Look forward to the announcement of a release date for Torchlight II later this year.
