Leggings, no longer in plain colors

When leggings barged on the scene more than a year ago, and especially when it became clear that they were “persistent” enough to have good chances of making their stay longer, the fashion industry continued to stand its ground. There was no way for such items – halfway between pants and hoses – to last that much in the face of other, stronger, and more reasonable trends. Yet, not only did leggings make it through, but they also evolved in time, and the latest Topshop offering stands precisely for that.

We all know that geek chic is now causing havoc both on catwalks and on the streets, so it was somehow only natural for one item such as this to come along. Introducing the Pacman leggings (yellow on black), Topshop is now offering all genuine and aspiring geek girls just the thing to bring the ultimate nerdy element ever and incorporate it into their outfit. Made of viscose and Elastane, these leggings are machine washable and, for £18, guaranteed to make buyers the envy of all other, less trendy girlfriends.

However, just like in the case of plain leggings, this model too is already frowned upon. For instance, the girls at TheFashionPolice, after lamenting the fate of the fashion industry now that it has become crystal clear that leggings are going nowhere, are also expressing their disapproval for the new, geek-oriented release. “We really can't imagine a scenario in which we're getting dressed and suddenly think, ‘Damn, I really wish I had a pair of Pacman-covered leggings, because they're just what this outfit needs!’ but then, a few years ago we wouldn't have been able to envisage a scenario in which leggings of ANY kind were being sold and worn,” they write.

In all fairness, leggings are, and will probably continue to be a subject of much debate among stylists and fashion connoisseurs. With all that, they are still here among us, and perhaps this should speak volumes for their potential as one of the most versatile items of clothing ever to be released. Until this is settled, however, we have the Pacman leggings to enjoy.
