Online registrations and paper submissions are opened for the second European edition of the Hack In The Box (HITB) security conference, which will feature a keynote panel discussion with speakers from leading software vendors.

Scheduled to take place between 17 and 20 May 2011 in Amsterdam, HITBSecConf 2011 will open with a presentation from Facebook’s Chief Security Officer, Joe Sulivan.

Faced with the task of protecting over 500 million registered accounts, the Facebook security team deals with unique challenges across a wide spectrum of abuse and terms of service violations.

Day two will begin with a keynote panel discussion titled “The Economics of Vulnerabilities,” which will bring together speakers from Mozilla, Adobe, McAfee, Google, TippingPoint, and possibly Microsoft.

In particular, the discussion will see the participation of Lucas Adamski, director of security engineering at Mozilla; Steve Adegbite, a senior security strategist at Adobe; Aaron Portnoy, TippingPoint’s security research team manager; Dave Marcus, director of McAfee’s AvertLabs research division; and Chris Evans, information security engineer at Google.

Katie Moussouris, a senior security strategist with Microsoft’s Security Response Center (MSRC) might also join the panel, but her response is still pending.

Paper submissions for HITBSecConf are opened and they are expected until February 18, 2011, at the latest. Topics of interest cover a wide area of information security.

They include cloud security, 3G/4G/WIMAX security, file system security, SS7/GSM/VoIP security, smart card and physical security, network protocols, analysis and attacks, applications of cryptographic techniques, side channel analysis of hardware devices, data recovery, forensics and incident response, analysis of malicious code / viruses / malware, Windows / Linux / OS X / *NIX security vulnerabilities, next generation exploit and exploit mitigation techniques and WLAN, GPS, HAM Radio, Satellite, RFID and Bluetooth security.

The event will also have tech training sessions on a variety of subjects, ranging from hunting Web attackers and Web attacking methods to exploitation and memory analysis techniques.

Hacking contests, hackerspaces showcasing and a lock picking village will also be a part of the experience. “For 2011 we're excited to be expanding the hackerspaces concept, bringing a new attack-only Capture the Flag competition and also adding on a keynote panel discussion on the 'Economics of Vulnerabilities',” said Dhillon Andrew Kannabhiran, founder and CEO of Hack in The Box.
