The Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) recommends using the micro USB as a single, universal cross-manufacturer USB cable connector for mobile phones from now on. That seems to suit the top five mobile phone manufacturers just perfectly, as they have decided to line up to this decision in the future.

The huge number of chargers and data cables in circulation makes it considerably more difficult for users to manage their mobile phones. There are also many different peripherals such as headsets for voice calls, car kits, data cables, all with its individual connector, which might pose a considerable problem for the user. The OMTP considers that this restricts competition by creating barriers on market entry, a situation which needs mending.

There is a solution for this problem, as the USB is a PC industry standard that could make the perfect solution for responding to this great diversity. A single USB-based connector should streamline the peripheral market and, as a result, provide better options for the handset owners.

"The OMTP's work to bring consensus for what is such a simple yet significant recommendation will have wide reaching benefit. With the reduction of cables needed for mobile data connectivity, we can further enhance user experiences in our devices while reducing the burden to the environment", stated Markku Verkama, Director of Portfolio Planning at Nokia.

Mobile phone users change their handsets quite frequently, which also triggers a huge number of chargers and data cables in circulation. With the adoption of the USB connector as the standard one, even peripheral handset producers will have the chance of getting their devices across.

At this time, Nokia is strongly involved in the adoption of the USB as the best solution. Aside from this leading mobile phone producer, Samsung and Sony Ericsson also joined, while Motorola has already started using the USB connector in its RAZR2 V9m phone model.
