Coming in 2010

Activision seems to be content to create sequels even if the initial products were not great sellers or hits with reviewers. With a sequel to DJ Hero confirmed as being worked on by both the Chief Executive Officer of the publisher, Bobby Kotick, and a highly valued DJ who will have his music featured, David Guetta, Tony Hawk is also talking about a sequel to the RIDE skating game. It seems that putting odd peripherals to good use is one of the main company lines.

Using Twitter, Tony Hawk signaled that development officially started on the sequel to RIDE and that the game already seemed to be a significant improvement on the experience that was offered last year to gamers.

He wrote a message saying that “Just met with @robomodo about our next project and it's already much better than I expected.” The problem with quality assessments coming from Tony Hawk himself is that they often appear to be on the optimistic side, especially when his name is involved. Before the release of RIDE, the skater was quick to praise the game offered and even challenged those who did not like it to come and play with him.

The first RIDE managed to just sell 114,000 pricey copies in the United States in its launch month, despite having a pretty significant media campaign behind it. The main reason for the poor performance was the hit and miss nature of the skate peripheral, which seemed to be unable to register some of the player’s movements.

Getting a sequel out that greatly improves the experience will prove difficult with the peripheral staying the same. And, on the other hand, players will probably not be interested in getting a RIDE sequel if it involves paying more for another piece of plastic.
