We’ve all done things when we were younger that we’re embarrassed of today, but we’re not even close to being the star Tom Hardy is. The actor, who is winning over a new legion of fans thanks to his role in George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” now out in theaters, was once just a regular bloke, posting on MySpace in the hope of finding real love.
The photos from his profile, which his loyal fans must already know because they’ve been around for years, have re-emerged online and gone viral, thanks to a boost in attention brought on by “Mad Max.” And they’re what you might call a sight for sore eyes.
Tom Hardy is becoming a movie star
When he was 30 (he’s 37 now), Hardy started his own profile on MySpace, where he’d often post photos of himself at work: getting ready for a new character, showing off the muscles he’d acquired for the role or a new piece of body art he’d added to his collection.
Because he’d always been an animal lover, he would also post pictures with his dogs, or basically pics of himself larking around - mostly in his underwear, for some reason. In one shot, he’s showing off his cooking skills as he’s introducing a turkey in the oven and a caption announcing that he’s “cooking a turkey yo.”
Hardy has had a loyal following since he broke on the scene as the lead in “Bronson” in 2008, but to the mainstream audience, he’s just the guy who had a supporting role in “Inception,” played Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises” and is now getting his shot at A-list status with Mad Max.
Yes, he happens to be very handsome and articulate, talented and not too full of himself, in the way other celebrities are. He’s also earned feminists’ approval by not just starring in the surprisingly feminist “Mad Max” but by shutting down a sexist question posed to him at Cannes. Video of it went viral.
In other words, Tom Hardy is becoming a movie star because he has the Internet rooting for him. With all this increased attention, it was to be expected for his older photos to re-emerge.
Tom Hardy, the hard poser
And they are a sight to behold!
As you can see from the Twitter samples below, some of them are just painfully awkward, because you can never tell if he was being serious about them or not.
Some are downright hilarious, not necessarily because he’s doing something out of the ordinary (other than cooking a turkey yo) but because of the contrast of this side of Tom and the Tom fans see on camera.
Hardy is inclined to play darker roles, individuals who are either deeply disturbed or misfits, because he says there’s more room to explore there than he would have by playing a good guy. Seeing the guy from “Warrior” or “Lawless” or “Locke” pose with his beer gut out, in what looks like a pair of oversize panties, is bound to make for an impacting contrast.
So there you have it. If you’re a fan of Tom Hardy, today is a good day because the Internet wants you to remember the time when he was the hardest poser on MySpace. #NeverForget
