Ever since Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Tom Cruise, lot of ink has been spilled on whether the decision had anything to do with Scientology or not. According to a new report, it had more to do with Tom's controlling ways than with his involvement in the cult.

Katie filed divorce papers a little over a week ago, thus putting an end to the 5-year marriage. She's asking for sole custody of her 6-year-old daughter with Tom, Suri.

TMZ claims to have it on very good authority that the straw that broke the camel's back wasn't Tom's ties with the Church of Scientology, but rather the ties he kept Katie bound with.

He was too controlling, treating her like a robot, the celebrity e-zine writes.

In the end, this was more than what Katie could take, so she decided to break free from him and take their daughter with her as well.

“Tom Cruise controlled Katie Holmes like a puppetmaster, making every major and even minor decision in her personal and professional life and in the end, she felt like she couldn't breathe without his permission... this according to sources close to the actress,” TMZ writes.

This started almost the day they began dating, and only got worse in time.

“Movie studio-connected sources tell us Tom executed an 'Art Kill' way back when Katie was doing 'Thank You for Smoking' in 2005, when the 2 first started dating,” TMZ claims.

“Sources tell us Tom instructed producers to 'kill' any promotional photos which showed Katie and Aaron Eckhart engaged in kissing or 'anything else compromising',” adds the report.

He continued calling the shots when Katie worked on “Batman Begins,” making sure she played only by his rules – rules which had her flying his private jet to promotional appearances instead of flying with the cast.

TMZ notes that Katie's co-star Morgan Freeman was “disgusted” by the situation and how he'd taken over her life.

“Ultimately, our Katie sources say she grew sick and tired of playing Pinocchio to Tom's Geppetto... and decided it was time to cut the strings,” the aforementioned media outlet says.

Gossip lovers will know that one of Katie's monikers in the blogosphere was Robo-Kate, which was bestowed upon her shortly after she married Tom.

There has also been a lot of talk throughout the years about how the only reason Katie would not do the “Batman” sequel “The Dark Knight” was because he prohibited it, ordering her to be a wife and mother first, and actress only afterwards.
