The game will be profitable despite PS4 selling more than Xbox One

Electronic Arts has confirmed that it took the decision to bring Titanfall only on the PC, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 platforms a few years ago based on sales forecasts for the PS4 and Xbox One.

Titanfall is one of the most anticipated games of the year and EA is banking big on the new multiplayer shooter, hoping that it will generate a lot of sales across the platforms on which it will appear: the PC, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.

The publisher revealed some time ago that the PS3 or PS4 wouldn't get Titanfall at all, although things might change for a potential sequel.

Various reasons were given for this exclusivity to Microsoft consoles by developer Respawn, but recently EA's CFO Blake Jorgensen confirmed that the decision to bring Titanfall on Xbox One and Xbox 360 was based on forecasts from a few years ago about the success of the PS4 and Xbox One.

"I think you should assume that we made that decision when it was back a few years ago when we decided to go exclusive," Jorgensen told investors, via GameZone. "We had some forecast at that time from where we thought both Xbox and PlayStation would be and that's what we based our decision on. I think we're still feeling very comfortable with that."

EA's forecasts leaned heavily towards the Xbox One achieving better sales than the PS4 but, as we now know, things are quite the opposite, with the PS4 leading in terms of sales.

Even so, Jorgensen emphasized that Titanfall would be a very profitable game for EA and Respawn despite there being fewer Xbox One consoles out there.

"And thus, when we ship that product, it's fairly high margin for us until we start to share royalties with [Respawn]. You should assume in FY '15, we'll start to share royalties as the revenue builds, and that will start to reduce the profitability of the product over time. But the initial ship-in at the volumes that we're anticipating and built into our guidance are fairly profitable."

Titanfall launches in March, and already quite a few new details have appeared online.
