Despite the fact that some fans question the reasoning behind the decision to use world of the Elder Scrolls for an MMO, the team at ZeniMax Online believes that the time is right to take the core mechanics of the world and its best-known spaces and make the experience open to more players.

Brian Wheeler, who is the leading Player versus Player designer working on The Elder Scrolls Online, has sat down with VG247 for a Question and Answer session and stated, “The Elder Scrolls Online is something we’re all attached to. We all love The Elder Scrolls. We love the world and we love all types of Elder Scrolls games.”

The developer added, “We believe that it’s simply time for you to be able to play those games with friends. So the world is rich, and yes it is a ‘fantasy MMO’, but that’s what The Elder Scrolls is, a fantasy world. And we think it’s time we bring you in and let you play that with your friends.”

The answer was linked to one fan’s observation that in many ways The Elder Scrolls Online was nothing more than a collection of tropes and known mechanics that use a new game setting.

The Elder Scrolls Online was revealed earlier this year and rumors talking about an Elder Scrolls-powered MMO were swirling around for years before that moment.

The game is still in the early stages of development, but the team behind it is very ambitious, aiming not just to bring all the provinces of Tamriel to life but also to introduce complex faction-versus-faction mechanics and battle areas that can hold 200 players at the same time.

Gamers will be able to join one of three factions in order to fight back the undead armies of the Imperials while also battling for control of territory with other human players.

The Elder Scrolls Online is set to launch during 2013.
