Time is running out for Windows Live Spaces and users of the soon-to-be discontinued Microsoft service need to take action in the coming weeks or risk losing their content.

On March 16th, 2011, the Redmond company will pull the plug on Windows Live Spaces for good, reaching the end of the road on a move it set on in 2010.

At that time, the software giant partnered with WordPress in order to provide existing Spaces users with a viable alternative to migrate their blogs o to create new ones.

There isn’t much time for those still on Spaces to complete their transition to Wordpress.com, or to find another alternative for their blogging needs.

“We’re glad to hear that many of you have had a smooth experience in upgrading your Spaces blog to WordPress.com and are connecting the fantastic blogging capabilities on WordPress.com with the leading communications and sharing services on Windows Live,” revealed Dharmesh Mehta, Director, Windows Live Product Management.

“We’re excited to announce that between blog upgrades and new signups, Spaces bloggers have created over 1 million new blogs on WordPress.com since we began our partnership.”

I don’t know whether you remember of not, but Microsoft has already indicated that 1 million new WordPress blogs had been set up by former Windows Live Spaces users by the end of November 2010.

This to me indicates that the vast majority of Spaces bloggers that have been intent on continuing with their blogs have already made the jump to WordPress.

Still, the software giant will continue to remind those that haven’t migrated off of Spaces yet that it’s time to do so.

“In addition to this blog and notifications on Spaces pages, we’ll be sending around another email newsletter this week to remind customers that haven’t upgraded yet,” Mehta stated.

“So if you still haven’t upgraded your blogging experience, please get moving quickly as we’re down to the last few weeks before we finally close down Windows Live Spaces.”
