How far does the New Mother Syndrome go?

We often hear about the so-called biological clock that lets women know it's time to have a child to make their lives complete and give them the feeling of fulfillness. Well, let's presume that this biological clock does exist and that it indicates/signals that the woman's body is ready to carry a child and give birth. And let's say that the woman does give birth eventually. Obviously, taking care of the little baby can be an exhausting task to fulfill.

Once a woman becomes a mother, she tends to become obsessive in what concerns the welfare of her child. And that's when the New Mother Syndrome appears. According to Donna Shepherd, the NMS manifests itself on 3 levels, affecting the woman's thoughts, sight and heart.

All one can think of in such a case is if the child is well, if s/he is cold, hot, or hungry and constantly worrying and supervising every action of the little one.

In what regards the sight, Donna Shepherd says: "We develop tunnel vision. In a room full of people, we see only our precious tiny baby."

A mother's heart is filled with so much love that she feels it's gonna burst. No other love can surpass the one for the baby.

It's only natural to feel proud about your offspring but some exaggerate and take it too far. As such an example I will use the case of 2 famous families: the Brangelina couple and the TomKat one.

As you probably already know, Angelina Jolie's baby girl with Brad Pitt, Shiloh, has been kept away from the press' eyes for quite a long while and when her mother took her anywhere, she would always be covered and protected like a priceless treasure. Of course, she must be?in her parents' eyes and as it seems, in the whole world's eyes, because the little one has stirred so much agitation around her as it was never seen before. She is said to have her father's eyes, her mother's lips and that she was born to be a star. All right, so she's beautiful?no one argues on that. But let's face it; her birth would have been unnoticed if it weren't for her parents and so much fuss?I'm positive that there must be a child more beautiful than she is. Either way, Shiloh is the only one to have a statue at Madame Tussauds' Museum at such a young age. But could we say that this is a case of NMS? Let's see?we have the obsession over the child's welfare, the "tunnel vision" and the bursting heart. So?I guess we could include Angelina in the list of NMS mothers.

Now?the TomKats took that whole thing to another level. They kept their child, also a little girl, hidden from the public eye far too long. People were saying that she must be a freak or even that she doesn't exist, but their parents didn't give up. Suri must be protected! And they do protect her all right. They don't let anyone touch her and that is if they'd had the privilege of being allowed to see her. Is she made of crystal or something that the parents won't allow anyone to have tactile contact with her? The precious' pictures were also auctioned but the adequate price was hard to find when we're talking about the TomKats. Opposite to Shiloh having a statue, Suri's poop was bronzed for charity. Ha! Get that, Shiloh Nouvelle! Could all that be because of her father's scientological way of thinking and acting? Whether it is or it isn't, scientology doesn't seem to be beneficial for Katie as she is seen more and more pale as if life is leaving her gradually. Or so they say?The question is: is Katie Holmes a NMS mother? Well, she might be, but I think that the most NMS affected in this family is actually Tom Cruise, as it seems that most of family's actions are "directed" by him.

I gave these examples because they seemed to be more accessible due to the popularity of the 2 couples but I assure you that all families pass through this phase. The difference is that it doesn't reach the same level as in the case of celeb families.

NMS is not a disease, but a normal and understandable way of thinking about your own child. It makes you realize that motherhood is one of God's gifts and that few things in life can be compared to it. But from that to thinking that your offspring is a God himself/herself?it's kind of far-fetched, don't you think?
