Veterinarians say it could be a matter of hours before Tian Tian gives birth

Veterinarians and staff at Edinburgh Zoo are now busy monitoring a female giant panda's every move. They say that Tian Tian might be pregnant, and that it could be only a matter of hours until she gives birth.

Those in charge of looking after Tian Tian explain that, over the past few days, the female giant panda has displayed signs of what they call nesting behavior.

What's more, tests have shown that her progesterone levels have increased, sources say.

However, because giant pandas often undergo so-called phantom pregnancies, veterinarians are unable to say whether or not Tian Tian is indeed about to deliver a cub.

More so since, in the case of pandas, fetuses are incredibly small and females don't get a “baby bump” that they might wish to show off.

Tian Tian was artificially inseminated back in April. At that time, veterinarians used male gametes collected from two different pandas, i.e. Yang Guang and Bao Bao.

If Tian Tian is indeed pregnant, either male could be the cub's father.
