Apple reports record sales of its new tablet computer

Apple has confirmed that sales of its new iPad have topped three million units since its launch on Friday, March 16.

Speaking at a conference call yesterday, Apple’s chief executive officer, Tim Cook, revealed to analysts that the third-generation iPad had amassed record sales.

The Cupertino, California-based company now confirms the feat with Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, saying that “The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold―the strongest iPad launch yet.”

“Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can't wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday,” said Schiller.

Among the key features of the new iPad, Apple mentions the stunning Retina display, the new A5X silicon with quad-core graphics, the 5-megapixel iSight camera with advanced optics, and the 10-hour battery life.

The company now has a 4G iPad model as well that supports fast LTE networks in the US and Canada. The new radios inside the third-gen iPad also support fast networks around the world such as HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA.

The third-generation iPad is currently available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland, UK and the US Virgin Islands.

Apple promises to have the gadget deployed in 24 more countries starting at 8:00 a.m. local time this Friday (March 23) through the Apple Online Store, the company’s retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers.

New territories getting the iPad 3 this week include Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macau, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.
