Foursquare, the service that helps you explore the world around you, has reached version 3.0 on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. The new app has personalized recommendations, an all-new leaderboard, and more types of Specials. It just hit the App Store now!

According to the developers, “This is no 2.3... we've made such big changes to foursquare that this is a whole new version.”

So, what’s so exciting about version 3.0 that it deserved previewing in 1,500+ words on the official foursquare blog?

Well, “big change 1”, as the company puts it, is “personalized recommendations” which now makes it easier to look at friends’ check-ins and Tips to get ideas of good restaurants in a given area.

With foursquare 3.0 on your iPhone, simply “tap on the 'Explore' tab and you'll be able to see recommendations based on where you go, what your friends do, and what the entire foursquare community likes.”

According to the developers, “It's the easiest way to plan your nights out.”

A new leaderboard is foursquare’s big change no. 2 - an updated point system to reflect more of the things users are proud of.

Big change #3 is actually a bunch of things - six new ways for businesses to reward your loyalty.

“We created the first version of Specials because Mayors asked to be rewarded for their loyalty,” foursquare representatives say. But with over 7 million users, earning a mayorship is pretty hard now.”

“So, we’ve created six new ways for businesses to reward your loyalty, and, starting today, you'll see them all in the app. More ways to save at more places: check in with friends, swarm specials, and more!” says foursquare.

According to the changelog for version 3.0, the new release also delivers “a ton of small fixes and updates.”

“Hope you enjoy foursquare 3.0! After we get a full night's sleep, we'll start work on the next one,” foursquare concludes.
