It would appear that Thortech had the same idea as so many other hardware makers, namely that of using the CeBIT 2011 trade show as a stage for its most prized inventions, one of them being a very efficient PSU.

When it comes to power supplies, a very relevant factor, these days, in deciding on a purchase is energy efficiency.

Granted, PSUs have various wattages and voltages, and the cable array, plus the modular design (or lack thereof) are among the primary factors that customers look at.

Still, with concerns regarding environmental safety and cost reduction, efficiency has become very important as well.

The 80Plus rating system is, of course, the one that determines just how high a model sits from this point of view.

That said, Thortech delivered the Platinum Plus 850W power supply which, as one may guess form the name, has 80Plus Platinum certification.

80Plus Gold is already a high enough ranking, but Platinum really determines those PSU that stand above all the rest. In this case, efficiency is of up to 92%.

Other assets of the newcomer are the single 12V rail (delivers 100A) and the modular design, leading to a good airflow and avoidance of cable clutter.

The GeIL-owned outfit has yet to mention the release date or price of its newest creation, but did say it would be bundled with a Power Meter, essentially a fan controller with an LCD screen and meant to be placed inside a 5.25-inch drive bay. It will let one check the rotary speed, the voltage, current and the wattage.

Of course, this particular product is not the only high-quality PSU on show at CeBIT at the moment. In fact, FSP (a company that also released an 80Plus Platinum rated model of its own some time ago) has an 80Plus Gold, fanless power supply on display.
