The competition aims to spark positive debates on women's rights

The Thomson Reuters Foundation in collaboration with Finnish communications company, Nokia have announced a new photo competition that aims to “spark positive debate on women’s rights, and to help foster social change” through the power of images.

The competition is open to all enthusiastic photographers and photojournalists and swirls around profound themes like motherhood, innovation, leadership, courage, passion etc, meant to empower women all over the world.

The submissions must be sent until Tuesday 11, February 2014, after which the jury will select 10 finalists that will have to use their photographic skills to create a unique portfolio of images illustrating women's empowerment using a Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone.

The judges of the competition are: Reuters photographer and winner of the World Press Photo 2006 Finbarr O’Reilly; Journalist, author and Chime for Change Managing Editor Mariane Pearl, Editor-in-Chief of the Thomson Reuters Foundation Tim Large and Nokia Imaging Technology Marketing Manager Kristina Bjorknas.

The winner of the Reuters Foundation-Nokia Photo Competition will be awarded:

• The very first Thomson Reuters Foundation-Nokia Award • An all expenses paid trip to attend a Mobile Journalism training course organized by the Thomson Reuters Foundation and led by professional journalists • A Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone • Exclusive opportunity to have your work published on Thomson Reuters Foundation’s award-winning website trust.org and across the Thomson Reuters Foundation and Nokia’s social media channels • Exclusive opportunity to have your work/portfolio reviewed by the Thomson Reuters Foundation multimedia team • Interview published on trust.org

In addition to that, the photographer that receives the highest number of votes from the public will be awarded the Community Choice prize, which consists of a brand new Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone along with a copy of the 2013 edition of the ‘Reuters Our World Now’ photobook.

The winner of the competition will be announced on Wednesday 2, April 2014. The Reuters Foundation-Nokia Photo Competition is free to enter, but for the moment it seems that the web address where you can upload your photos is down.
