Voyager 1 is officially the first human-made object to leave the Solar System, a historic moment if there ever was one. The probe launched in 1977 and has been speeding away from the sun for the past 36 years.

It is now 19 billion kilometers (12 billion miles) from the sun and still moving at 17 kilometers (11 miles) per second.

Voyager 1 was able to achieve this impressive speed by using Saturn's gravity as a slingshot, accelerating the probe beyond its initial speed.

To celebrate the occasion, NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab put together a short video which goes briefly through the spacecraft's history and some of the more special moments.

The clip also explains how NASA was able to determine that Voyager exited the Solar System.

One minute in, you'll even be able to hear the sound of the interstellar space. The full NASA news conference of the announcement is below, including a fitting Star Trek tribute two minutes in.
