Designer envisions the new File Explorer for Windows 10

Microsoft has greatly improved plenty of features in Windows 10, but File Explorer is one of the apps that have received little attention since the debut of the Windows Insider program in October 2014.

The software giant has never talked about enhancements to the built-in file manager, despite the fact that many users have asked for all kinds of features, including tab support.

In the meantime, designers across the world create their own interpretations of a modern File Explorer, thus trying to show that there’s indeed room for improvement, and with a few tweaks here and there, Microsoft could really create a file manager that makes third-parties useless.

This is the case of a concept created by armend07, who added not only tab support but also a look that seems to perfectly match the appearance of modern apps developed by Microsoft for Windows 10.

As you can see for yourselves by clicking the photo above, the concept uses the traditional elements available in the Windows 10 apps released by Microsoft for the technical preview, including the controversial hamburger menu in the top left corner.

While the hamburger menu might not make sense in such an app because file, home, share, and view options are still being offered, it could actually be helpful for consistency across the devices, as Microsoft is looking to offer features and looks similar on phones and PCs. This could be possible if File Explorer becomes a universal app, just like the Edge browser.

Needless to say, this concept still needs some refinements in some key areas, but it can be easily used by Microsoft for the creation of its own file manager that could make File Explorer a better rival to third-party file managers such as Total Commander.

Right now, File Explorer is nothing more than a basic app for managing your files, but power users clearly feel the need for something a little bit more advanced.
