The astronauts actually had it easy compared to the rocket boosters

Only 355 people ever rode in the Space Shuttle and now, that the spacecraft has been retired, no one will ever get to experience the ride again. Well, at least not until the Shuttle is recreated as some sort of ride for some (distant) future amusement park.

Until then though, you can get an idea of what it felt like. In fact, you can experience a launch like no one has before, by hitching a ride with the Shuttle's booster rockets.

A video shot by a camera attached to one of the boosters captures the entire eight-minute flight, from launch, to orbit, and back to the Pacific Ocean. While the Shuttle wasn't completely reusable, a lot of its components, including the boosters, were.

The video has enhanced sound, courtesy of the famous Skywalker Sound, and you'll get the best experience on a surround sound system, especially if you download the original video, but a pair of decent headphones will do.

It's not a new video, but former astronaut Chris Hadfield decided to share it with the world now. He knows what he's talking about, as he's been on a couple of Space Shuttle missions, though not the ones the video is from, STS-117 and STS-127.
