Meet Matilda, possibly the freakiest cat that ever was

Matilda the cat is, to all intends and purposes, no different to any of the felines that now roam the Earth. Or so her owners would have us believe.

Judging by her big, glassy eyes, however, some might be tempted to think her an alien overlord come to torment us and seize control of our world.

No, really, this cat's eyes look strikingly similar to those of ET or whatever other aliens the movie industry has introduced us to over the years.

The feline wasn't born looking like this

When she was born in February 2013, Matilda looked just like any other kitten. During her first year of life, however, her owner noticed her right pupils become abnormally enlarged on several occasions.

At first, vets misdiagnosed the feline with leukemia. Some time after, however, Matilda's owners were told that what the cat actually had was a rare condition dubbed lens luxation.

This health complication, resulting from an inherent weakness and degeneration of the ligaments that support the lens, explains why Matilda's eyes now look pretty much out of this world.

Thus, the cat's owners say that, because of her suffering from said disorder, the cat's lenses in time both detached and Matilda ended up looking less like a run-of-the-mill feline and more like an alien.

Interestingly, word has it that the cat's siblings were also born with lens luxation and that they too needed medical help in their first few months of life on account of their gaze looking not quite right.

With both her lenses detached, Matilda is now blind. Even so, she seems perfectly at ease with her life and very much loves her family, The Bearded Man, The Lady and Dog.

Matilda is rather famous on social media

Since no quirky cat is complete without an army's worth of loyal fans on social media, Matilda the alien cat has her own Instagram, Facebook and even Twitter account and boast thousands of followers.

Like her family, Matilda's fans don't mind her odd appearance. Au contraire, they say that it was her freakishly big, glassy eyes that made them love her in the first place.
